Suzano joins the global initiative that proposes the decarbonization of the global economy
The company joins the Business Ambition for 1.5°C initiative and the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi)
Suzano – a global reference in the manufacture of bioproducts developed from the cultivation of eucalyptus – joined the Business Ambition for 1.5oC campaign and the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi). This movement seeks to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the consequent global transition to a low-carbon economy. The announcement also represents Suzano’s adhesion to the Race to Zero campaign, a coalition supported by the United Nations (UN) that brings together leaders committed to acting in a healthy, resilient recovery to stimulate the decarbonization of the world economy.
Joining the SBTi reinforces the company’s commitment to assume a relevant position in global discussions on the effects of climate change. This generational issue requires immediate and appropriate action by the world leadership and the global population.
“It’s fantastic to have Suzano joining the Race to Zero campaign. The company has shown strong leadership in promoting how the forestry sector can contribute to this global movement. We are proud to have them as partners in engaging other companies and governments to reach the 1.5oC goal,” says Gonzalo Muñoz, COP26 High-Level Climate Champions.
“We are developing, from planted trees, new products that can replace materials derived from fossil sources, and we also have our work directly linked to the capture of carbon from the atmosphere. But we want to go further, and by joining the Business Ambition for 1.5oC campaign, the SBTi, and the Race to Zero campaign, we will work to bring together more actors, whether from the private sector or the public sphere, in the discussion of how we can advance towards a low carbon economy,” says Walter Schalka, president of Suzano. The causative effects of climate change will be a central theme of discussions at COP26, the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in November.
Suzano is committed to further expanding its ambition and the speed of its decarbonization journey while promoting carbon removal from the atmosphere, contributing to the global climate agenda. To this end, Suzano will continue to invest in modernization projects focused on fuel efficiency, fossil fuel consumption reduction, energy use, and renewable energy use, among others.
